Upgrades to items let players increase the level of items that can be equipped, such as weapons, armor, and trinkets up to a certain amount. You can  upgrade item s at any NPC that accepts the appropriate currency.

Upgrade components are integrated into equipment to provide bonus effects and attribute bonuses. The majority of these upgrades are slot-restricted, but a few are universal.

Rerolling

In Diablo 4, a player can reroll a item upgrade. This is done by using the Level Up feature, which suspends the game and displays four randomly selected upgrades. The player can select one of the upgrades to continue the battle. Rerolling costs the same as a normal Level Up. However players should be cautious when selecting an upgrade as they won't know what the new stats will be until the item is rerolled.

The upgrades of an item are determined by the item's rank and rarity. Each level of an item's upgrade increases the power of its base by 3. The exception is glyphs that can be salvaged using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Depending on the type of item, upgrading it may cost Dilithium or gold. A lot of upgrades require Flightstones or crests. The number of crests and Flightstones required to upgrade an item depends on the level of the gear and the maximum upgrade level is established by Blizzard. Upgrades to the highest level are expensive particularly when upgrading PvE equipment.

Upgrades can also alter the weapon's ammunition or damage die size. They can also change the special characteristics of a weapon, such as its unwieldy or operative property, or its hand requirement. Certain upgrades can alter the appearance of weapons.
